A child passes on at Entarara as the rest of the family, the father, mother and a kid undergo treatment at the Loitokitok District Hospital after consuming what doctors suspect to be maize infected with aflatoxin.
Aflatoxins are poisonous and cancer-causingchemicals that are produced by certain molds(Aspergillus flavus and Aspergillus parasiticus) which grow in soil, decaying vegetation, hay, and grains. They are regularly found in improperly stored staple commodities such as cassava, chili peppers, corn, cotton seed, millet, peanuts, rice, sorghum, sunflower seeds, tree nuts, wheat, and a variety of spices.
Residents should properly store their grains especially after harvesting them. A call to awareness on this should be done to educate the local residents on proper ways to store their grains.
