The Loitokitok Half Marathon is organized by the Kilimanjaro Athletics’ Club, Kilimanjaro Bird Society and local businesses in Loitoktok. The objective is to restore the critical forest ecosystem around Mt. Kilimanjaro that is important for rainfall in the area and as far down as the Amboseli National Park.
The race will be held on Sunday, 16th October 2016. This year’s theme is “Saving Kilimanjaro Forest” an initiative seeking to restore the dwindling indigenous trees and forest cover on the slopes of Mt. Kilimanjaro crucial for rainfall in the Amboseli Tsavo ecosystem.
The on-going human activities are depleting this forest cover leading to water scarcity and human wildlife conflict. Through the race we hope to mobilise and nurture young athletic talent from the region and also create awareness on the Kilimanjaro forest ecosystem. Our five year theme is “SAVING KILIMANJARO” in line with our long term objective of having 1,000,000 trees planted in the lower slopes of Mt. Kilimanjaro to replace the dwindling forest cover. This year we hope to raise funds for 200,000 seedlings for planting in the rains following the race (November to February).
In line with our strategy to have as many participants as possible, we plan to offer free entry and participation in the race for most primary school students. However in order to have a quality event that will draw annual participation it is logistically impossible to allow free race entry to everyone. We therefore have to charge a small fee to participate in the marathon. With your support and sponsorship we can enrol more people in the race.
We hope to use the event to also sensitize participants on emerging environmental and conservation issues in the region.
All the race proceeds are used for the indigenous trees reforestation that aims to support individual and families involvement in the ecosystem restoration project.
On behalf of the organizing committee we would like to invite you to this year’s event. This year’s charges are
Corporate Fee – 2000, Cap, Tshirt, Refreshments
